Top 25 Minority Internships for 2017

Internships represent a great opportunity for college students to gain on-the-job experience in their field of study while they are still in college. College students can realistically complete several internships before they graduate. Listing internships on your resume enhances your credentials and gives you an advantage over other candidates when it comes time to search for a job.

This is particularly important for minorities who often have to struggle to find equal job opportunities. For that reason, there are an increasing amount of internships being offered for minorities. The companies offering these internships understand the bias often experienced by minorities and want to provide them with every opportunity to gain pre-employment, on-the-job experience.

Prepare early

To help you locate minority internships, here are the top 25 minority internships for 2017. Read each one carefully to determine application deadlines. Deadlines for application submission are usually several months prior to the start date, so now is the time to start searching for internships that interest you. Most will require official transcripts from college and a resume. Many will also ask for a personal statement of your accomplishments and goals. These are documents you can prepare ahead of time. Also be prepared to complete an essay.



TOP 25 MINORITY INTERNSHIPS FOR 2017

1. Microsoft Internship Program For Women and Minorities - is a 12-week summer internship program specifically designed for undergraduate minority college freshmen and sophomores. The program gives students experience in software engineering by rotating them across different software engineering roles. Students must major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related disciplines.

2. White House Initiative’s Year-Round Internship Program For African Americans - this internship is offered year-round to students who are enrolled part- or full-time in an accredited post secondary institution. Interns work 3 days a week and learn about African American-focused education policy, communications, and outreach at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.

3. TV One Internship Program - is open to full-time or part-time students attending an accredited college or university with an interest in a career in the media industry. TV One, one of the largest African American cable networks. Internships are offered to undergraduate college students in the Fall, Spring and Summer.

4. The NBA Internship Program - is open to students enrolled in an accredited undergraduate college or university and are between their junior or senior year OR graduate (MBA) students between their first and second years, or Law students between years one and two, or years two and three. The 10-week summer program is located in New York and New Jersey.

5. Black Enterprise Internships - paid internships are offered to college juniors and seniors as well as recent grads and graduate students interested in a career in the media industry. Internship areas are human resources, advertising, online, marketing and corporate. Locations include Los Angeles, New York and California.

6. The NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship - offers a two-year internship for a minority, female college student.  to be chosen for a unique two-year internship program. The internships is for a students with experience in communications and media relations in a sports environment.

7. The Minority Access Internship Program - offers spring, summer and fall internships for college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduates and professionals. Interns receive pre-employment training and counseling on career choices as well as professional development, with the possibility of full-time employment after graduation.

8. Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Internships  - offer 3 different paid internships along with housing for college students pursuing undergraduate associates or bachelors degrees. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required.

9. BET Networks Internships - provides paid internships for both undergraduate and graduate college students at five different BET locations. They are open to students interested in careers in the media industry. Internships are 10 weeks long.

10. Allstate Insurance Internships -  offers paid summer work experience internships for students who are still in college.  Internships are offered in a variety of major and minor study areas and offered at various locations across the U.S.

11. PricewaterhouseCoopers - offers more than 700 internships each year across 29 countries for college students majoring in accounting and finance. Students will work with highly skilled professionals and receive a realistic insight into the accounting and finance profession.

12. Dell Computers  - offers 10-12 week internships during the summer for undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of marketing and sales, finance and accounting, IT and more. Internships provide real-world experience for college students while they are still in school.

13. Oracle - offers a 8-week, paid internship for students who attend one of the 39-member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The internships help students to gain knowledge and experience in the field of technology.

14. General Motors - offers internships in the areas of communications, finance, information technology, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, health and safety. The internships offer a paid opportunity for students to receive a challenging work experience in the automotive industry.

15. Merck  - 9-11 week internships are available to college students in the areas of research & development, sales & marketing, information technology, human resources, communications, finance and legal, as well as internships in biology and chemistry.

16. Coca-Cola -  offers paid internships to minority students who are college sophomores majoring in chemistry, engineering, finance, human resources, information technology, marketing or business management. Internships are usually in Atlanta, Georgia.

17. NASCAR - offers internships to minorities through their NASCAR Diversity Internship Program, a 10-week, full-time, paid summer work opportunity for deserving students with an interest in the NASCAR industry. Applicants may be of Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic, or of other racial minority descent.

18. Google - offers rich learning experiences for college students that include pay. Google is rated No. 1 by Forbes as the best internship opportunity for college students interested in a career in software engineering. Google offers an open culture and rich learning experience as well as good pay.

19. National Urban League Summer Internship Program - offers internships to students who are interested in a career in the non-profit industry. The program provides an 8-week paid internship for college students in either New York City or Washington, D.C.

20. UNCF/NAACP - offers 10-week, paid summer internships to undergraduate students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The Gateway to Leadership Internship Program offers finance majors an opportunity to work with major financial organizations.

21. NABJ - the National Association of Black Journalists offers internships to minority students interested in pursuing a future career in journalism. Applicants selected for a 10-week internship will be offered positions in print, broadcast or online disciplines at selected news organizations across the country.

22. Internships with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders  -  this internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in college at least half-time and have knowledge of issues pertaining to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). It is offered through the White House Initiative on AAPI

23. Essence Communications Internship - this 9-week, paid internship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in a career in the media industry. Candidates must have a strong interest in issues among African American women.

24. Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) - this paid internship offers a full-time summer work experience for college students pursuing a career in advertising. Eligible students must be Asian/Asian American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Multiracial or Multi-ethnic.

25. Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program (HNIP)  - offers paid internships for college students in the spring, summer and fall. Over 50 students each session are offered internship positions in Washington, D.C.
