The Executive Office of the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy (EOP/ONDCP) leads interagency and intergovernmental policy development and analysis work focused on two distinct but interconnected mission spheres: public health interventions aimed at reducing illicit substance use or misuse of prescription drugs, treating substance use disorder, and developing and enhancing resources for those in recovery from substance use; and interdiction initiatives aimed at reducing the trafficking and overall availability of illicit substances and their chemical precursors. ONDCP's Office of Public Health (OPH) develops and implements public health approaches to reduce drug use and its consequences. This component drafts the relevant sections of the National Drug Control Strategy, provides robust budget guidance to ensure adherence to evidence-based public health approaches among the interagency, and convenes the interagency to ensure execution of drug policy priorities. Component staff work on a range of issues, including prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery, and healthcare finance, all with an equity lens. ONDCP/OPH seeks 2 full-time and 2 part-time intern(s) who are highly motivated to contribute to ONDCP's critical mission. OPH interns work on a variety of projects related to substance use prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery. This work will include assisting with research, writing, staffing meetings, and providing support to the Assistant Director and OPH team members. Majors in public health, social work, human services or related fields are preferred but not required. Paid or volunteer experience in prevention, harm reduction, treatment or recovery are a plus. Individuals with lived experience are encouraged to apply. The Spring 2024 internship term is currently scheduled to begin on January 22, 2024, and currently set to end on May 10, 2024. Interns will receive stipend payments of $375/week for part-time interns and $750/week for full-time interns. Part-time is considered a minimum of 15 hours/week to 34 hours/week; full-time is considered 35 – 40 hours/week. Stipend payments will be calculated based on the hourly rate (part-time or full-time) multiplied by the total weeks in the session (16). Two thirds of the overall stipend amount will be paid on or about the beginning of the internship; the remaining one third will be paid upon successful completion of the internship. In the event an internship ends early for any reason, the intern may be required to reimburse the government for any stipend amounts or portion thereof paid to the intern. All internships are located in Washington, D.C. All intern schedules are Monday – Friday and interns may only work between the hours of 7am – 7pm ET. Selected interns must be available for the entire duration of the Spring 2024 session (i.e., January 22 through May 10, 2024); and must be available for the entirety of the first day of the program (January 22, 2024). ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: • Must be a U.S. citizen; • Must be 18 years of age or older; • Males must be registered with the Selective Service; • Must be able to commit to at least 15 hours per week; • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college, community college, or university at least half-time; • Must pass a background check and drug test; • You may not receive compensation for this internship from any other source apart from the Executive Office of the President's stipend. Applications will be accepted from October 23, 2023, through November 9, 2023. However, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible during the application window. This internship will be conducted onsite/in-person; however, telework options may be available to selected candidates, contingent on supervisor approval and in accordance with the ONDCP Telework Policy.
