Undergraduate students who are pursuing careers as scientists, engineers, and mathematicians and want an intense yet exciting research environment will find it at Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Research Campus. Students who have been chosen to participate in the research internship have come from all over the world, including the U.S., Russia, China, South American and Europe.

The internship is 10 weeks in duration and is located near Washington, D.C. All expenses for housing, food and travel are paid by the program. In addition, interns receive a stipend of $4,500. The internship is held during the summer. All interns live in two interconnected townhouses located in the housing village on campus.


This is an exceptional opportunity for exceptional students. They will learn in state-of-the-art labs, attend weekly seminars by Janelia researchers and scientists, and explore Washington D.C. with other interns. Social activities might include camping in nearby mountains, a night at the Washington Nationals ballgame, or a tubing trip down the Potomac River.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a non-profit medical research organization based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, that was founded by American businessman Howard Hughes in 1953. HHMI is one of the largest private funding organizations in the U.S. for biological and medical research.
