Internship Tips

#1 - Don't Proscratinate
Now is the time to start searching for internships. If you are a bad procrastinator, now is the time to break that habit. Remember that many internship programs have early deadlines, and you don't want this to be the reason why you didn't get accepted. Utilize your winter break wisely, and sacrifice some time on your weekends.

#2 - Keep Your Grades Up
Your grades don't have to be perfect. Some internships require at least a 3.0 GPA. Others require at least a 2.0 GPA. Either way, you want to keep your grades as high as possible. This applies to high school and college students. Remember that companies do not want to hire interns who don't take school seriously.

#3 - Apply For As Many Opportunities As Possible
Don't be discouraged if you don't get the internship you want. There are tons of companies out there that offer internship opportunities to students. Remember to apply to corporations, non-profit organizations, and even government agencies - local and national.

#4 - Visit Your On-Campus Career Center
Every college has a career center on campus, and every high school has a guidance counselor who knows about internships. Utilize these resources and follow up with them on a monthly basis. Many will allow you to leave your resumé with them, and they will submit as they see fit.

#5 - Attend Career Fairs
Searching online is great, but nothing is better than showing up in person. Career fairs are designed for students who want to be recruited as interns and employees. Dress nicely, and bring plenty copies of your resumé. Many times, you can be hired on the spot.

#6 - Keep It When You Get It
When you finally do get an internship, take it very seriously. Many internships can easily turn into high-paying careers. So, be sure to show up on time every day, dress appropriately, work hard on your assignments, and treat it like a real job.

#7 - Add It To Your Resumé
If you complete an internship and the company does not hire you, don't panic. Not all internships will turn in to jobs. However, be sure to add your internship experience to your resumé. And if possible, add your mentor as a reference. This will be very impressive for future job interviews.

#8 - Do It Twice
When you finish one internship, why not consider doing another one? This will further enhance your resumé, and will allow you to gain even more experience and skills. It will also help you to get more and more comfortable with being in the workforce.
